HARRIS C. SKARSTROM
Nov. 9, 1942 – May 14, 2021
HARRIS CORWIN SKARSTROM, age 78, died peacefully on Friday, May 14, 2021, at Lakeside Health Center, West Palm Beach FL, where he has lived since 2016. TrustBridge Hospice also cared for him in his last months.
Harris grew up in Montvale, NJ, attended Nyack Junior School and Montvale schools. As a teenager, he operated a ham radio and he participated in Montvale bowling leagues. Upon graduation from Pascack Valley Regional High School,he traveled by bus and train to the West coast and continued traveling all around the US.
Harris loved all major sports and had an encyclopedic knowledge of Major League Baseball. He was hugely knowledgeable of music from early rock 'n' roll to all countrymusic. He wrote many song lyrics, some copyrighted, had several demos made, and he travelled to Nashville, a life-long dream.
He had a life-long sight-impairment which later led to glaucoma blindness. He came to West Palm Beach in the late 1980's and lived in several assisted living facilities, then Garden Villas ALF, before residing at Lakeside Health Center. He participated in the Braille Club and the Lighthouse for the Blind activities, Howard Park Senior Center, Powerhouse Gym, and St. Mary's dances.
He is survived by younger siblings, brother Erik Skarstrom of Malaga, Spain, and sister Eugenia Skarstrom Hammitt and brother-in-law, Craig Hammitt of Dieppe, France. Harris was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Charles W. Skarstrom and Eugenia J. Harris Skarstrom, and uncle, Corwin D. Harris.
There will be a Remembrance of Harris gathering at Lakeside Health Center in October 2021. Donations may be made in his memory to the Braille Club of Palm Beaches
